Cheshire West & Chester and Cheshire East councils are to launch a consultation on the future structure of their shared ICT service in December. The councils estimate that this could lead to about 70 of their combined 217 IT staff members being made redundant.

Cheshire East council said that the objective of the consultation is to produce a "new operating model" designed to increase the cost-effectiveness and efficiency of the service by the beginning of April.

"A ringfenced voluntary redundancy programme has already been introduced and the authorities are asking for expressions of interest," said the council in a statement.

The councils' IT staff are based at five locations in Chester, Winsford, Crewe, Macclesfield and Sandbach. They are currently responsible for the delivery of all ICT systems used by the two authorities.
