Dell has started shipping three new TFT displays, offered under its UltraSharp brand. The biggest is the 24in 2407WFP which costs £825 including VAT and delivery at the Dell online shop. Hunt around and you'll find it on sale for £765 or so.

It's got a 1,920 x 1,200 WUXGA widescreen resolution, 1000:1 contrast ratio, 6ms response (grey-to-grey) - or 16ms (black-to-white), if you prefer - and the brightness rating is 450 cd/m². The 2407WFP has a VGA input, a DVI-D connector with HDCP support and S-video, composite and component connectors. Add in four USB 2.0 ports, a nine-in-one card reader and a fully adjustable stand with rotate, swivel and tilt and you've got every feature that you could hope for apart from HDMI and a digital TV tuner.

Then we come to a pair of 20in TFTs. The UltraSharp 2007WFP costs £438 and has a 1,680 x 1,050 resolution, while the UltraSharp 2007FP (no W, you'll note) costs £428 and has a regular 1,600 x 1,200 resolution. Both of these panels have 800:1 contrast ratio, 16ms response and 300cd/m² brightness, but while they both have DVI-D, VGA, S-video and composite connectors, the 2007FP doesn't support HDCP. The moral of the tale would seem to be that you should only watch protected-content movies on a widescreen display. ®
