Grab a cloudy boss: VMware raids Amazon Web Services

Shouldn't that have happened before it coughed vCloud Hybrid Service?

It usually works the other way around, but VMware rolled out the vCloud Hybrid Service on both sides of the pond and then recruited an exec to run the show, poaching a senior technology evangelist from Amazon Web Services.

Italian national Simone Brunozzi has rocked up as VMware vCloud Hybrid Service veep and chief technologist, Hybrid Cloud - presumably he'll need a bigger business card than most to accommodate this title.

Before leaving his home country to join a "little bookstore startup in Seattle" which grew into the stuff of nightmares for tech infrastructure players, the man was an entrepreneur, consultant, uni professor and CTO.

"As often happens in life, fate rolled the dice, and in the moment when I started looking around, an old acquaintance talked me into accepting an exciting position at VMware," he said.

VMware, Brunozzi added is a "young company" that is reinventing itself - ie, doesn't want to be largely reliant on virtualisation - and has just released the vCloudy service in Europe. He is set to steer the campaign.

"The position I was offered is a challenge," he added, "with new types of customers (more enterprise, fewer SMBs and startups), different ways to adopt and buy services, different barriers and incentives at play, and, ultimately, different players in the game."

It is only his first week on the job, but Brunozzi has apparently already been at the corporate Kool-Aid, and talked up VMware's abilities to shapeshift.

"It doesn't fully surprise me that the company which made virtualisation the de facto standard on every data centre in the world is again reinventing itself with the software-defined data centre, end user computing and… vCloud Hybrid Services," he added.

Brunozzi added somewhat ominously, "you will hear from me again, possibly more often than you'd like".

VMware lifted the covers off its vCloud Hybrid service in the UK recently, hosted in Blighty by data centre partner Equinix. A second provider will be added in the not-too-distant future, we are told. ®
