The UK Internet Services Providers' Association (ISPA) has received a record number of entries for its annual awards this year, with 180 entries across 17 categories, the trade body said today.

Fighting it out for Best Consumer ISP are freenetname, Pipex, UK Online, Virgin.net and Wanadoo. Those keeping their fingers and toes crossed for the Best Business ISP gong are Datanet, Mistral, NDO, Pipex and PlusNet.

The tussle for Best Portal this year is between Blueyonder from Telewest Broadband, MSN, Yahoo! UK & Ireland, Tiscali and Wanadoo.

There are a stack of other award categories, which can all be found here.

ISPA has already announced the short-list for the most interesting awards of its annual industry get-together.

BT, Carol Vorderman and the European Union (EU) are all in the running for the dubious honour of being named Internet Villain of the Year.

Former ecommerce minister Stephen Timms and sprawling communications regulator Ofcom are in the running for the title of Internet Hero.

The winners of all awards will be announced at a ceremony to be held in London on 24 February. ®
