Agfa axes low-end scanners

And digital cameras

Agfa has decided to ditch production of low-end scanners due to the current market downturn.

The German-Belgian company, which has been pumping out scanners for this end of the market for around eight years, is also pulling out of digital camera sector.

Agfa has already told its resellers in Europe not to expect any more digital cameras.

The company does intend to continue to make high-end scanners.

The slowdown in PC sales, together with market saturation and the fact that shoppers often get a scanner thrown in for free when they buy a computer, has made conditions tougher for scanner sellers.

Worldwide scanner sales are expected to fall to $2.6 billion in 2006 from this year's projected $3.1 billion, according to a survey released last month by Info Trends. ®
