Reseller ‘leaks’ iBook G4 specs?

Cock-up not conspiracy

Update A major UK reseller claims to have made a mistake when it appeared to pre-announce this weekend Apple's intention to migrate the iBook consumer notebook line to the G4 processor.

Dabs' latest computer magazine off-the-page sales advert refers to a "iBook G4". The machine is equipped with a 500MHz processor, 60GB hard drive, 256MB of memory and a DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drive. It also sports a 15in display, the ad says.

The price for the machine is £859 ($1408) excluding sales tax.

However, to dash the hopes of a new iBook update, Dabs today told The Register that the ad was "incorrect", and despite including both the iBook's name and its photo, the ad should have said 'iMac'.

Dabs also apologised for any confusion this "honest error" may have caused.

Error it may have been but that doesn't explain why the company was advertising a 500MHz desktop machine on a page devoted to notebooks - especially since the iMac is now at 1GHz and has been for some time.

Even so, it might be going too far to read conspiracy into Dab's cock up. Our channel sources said they had heard nothing of such an update, and the clock speed remains well below what Apple would want to ship a G4-based iBook at. With the PowerBook like recently boosted to 1GHz and up and the current iBooks at 800-900MHz, we'd expect G4 iBooks to ship at the same clock frequency as the older models. Clock for clock the G4 is slightly faster than the G3, and has the added benefit of the Velocity Engine.

Still, a 15in iBook would be nice, and handily help position the iBook as a consumer version of the more pro-oriented PowerBook line. ®
