VMware says cloud 'capacity constraint' in Australia is not a shortage, but it's adding new hosts anyway

Orange light has been on in Sydney for over 36 hours

A VMware warning on cloud capacity shortages does not mean users have issues to worry about, but the company is adding new hosts to increase capacity anyway.

The not-a-shortage is mentioned in this status update titled "VMware Cloud on AWS: Capacity Constraint in Asia Pacific - Sydney region".

The warning says: "New SDDC [software-defined-data-centre] creation may not be available in one or more Availability Zones in Asia Pacific - Sydney. The team is actively investigating the issue. There is no impact on existing workloads."

So what's going on?

Nothing, we've been told.

"There are no issues with the VMware Managed Cloud platform," said Mike Reddie, senior director for cloud at VMware Australia/New Zealand.

"Due to the COVID-19 situation, more and more customers are turning to VMware to help with their technology needs," Reddie said. "As a result, we're currently experiencing a very high volume of activity as we work with customers to ensure their technology systems can scale out to meet their business continuity needs. This means that we are managing capacity allocation on a real time basis, however we have no shortages that customers should be concerned with."

And that management includes adding more capacity. While your humble hack was preparing this piece, a status update appeared that says "VMware Engineering team continues to work on adding new hosts for Asia Pacific - Sydney region".

No time frame was offered for the new hosts becoming available.

All other VMware cloud services are fully operable at the time of writing, although some had one of those embarrassing "oops, we need to replace that SSL certificate" moments on Monday. ®
