Hey mate, are you dense? Why, yes. Yes, I am, says the NAND in Micron's new client SATA SSD

Micron has rejigged its 1100 SATA SSD with denser NAND to produce the new 1300 model.

The flash this time around is 96-layer, TLC (3bits/cell) 3D NAND. The 1100 used 32-layer TLC 3D NAND.

Both drives are disk drive replacements for notebook and desktop PCs.

Like the 1100, the 1300 comes in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB capacities. As before, it's available in both M.2 and 2.5-inch formats, with the 2TB capacity only available in the 2.5-inch drive. The interface is the same, 6Gbit/s SATA.

The 1300's performance is pretty similar to the 1100's, with random read/write IOPS being 90,000/87,000; the 1100 pumped out 92,000/83,000. Sequential read/write bandwidth is up to 530/520MB/sec; it was 530/500MB/sec with the 1100. Blink and you'll miss the difference.

Endurance has risen from the 1100's 120TBW* and 240TBW at the 256GB and 512GB capacity points, to 180TBW and 300TBW for the same 1300 capacities. Both drives supply 400TBW for the 1TB and 2TB capacity units.

The 1300 uses 75mW of power and has Opal 2.0 self-encryption. Micron claimed it has exceptional price-to-performance ratios without providing any numbers, or availability data either. Basically, the 1300 is the 1100 made with cheaper and slightly longer-life flash. ®

* Terabytes Written – this is a measure of how much endurance a drive has. If it is rated 180TBW, for example, that means you can write/overwrite 180TB to the drive before you need to replace it.
