Need a 1TB microSD for your smartmobe? Come April, you can free up storage space in your wallet and buy one

MWC Micron and WD's SanDisk both dropped the veil on massive memory cards for your mobile at Barcelona's phone confab this morning: specifically, the little beggars are stuffed with a terabyte of storage.

The Idaho storage firm said its c200 1TB microSDXC UHS-I card will be on the market in the "second quarter" – it's only sampling right now – while the SanDisk card will be out in April.

Micron's fingernail-sized card uses 96-layer 3D NAND configured as QLC (4bits/cell) storage and delivers up to 100MB/s read and 95MB/s write burst performance helped by a dynamically sized SLC cache.

WD's SanDisk's UHS-I microSDXC, meanwhile, boasts "up to" speeds of 160MB/s reads and 90MB/s writes.

These are fresh-out-of-the-box speeds, which means they might degrade with use, though Micron said its device controller carries out maintenance during idle time to help sustain peak performance.

Random IO is up to 4,000 IOPS for reads and 2,000 for writes for both Micron and SanDisk's kit.

Micron said it meets the A2 App Performance Class specification for Android Adoptable storage, meaning app and game files on the card load faster. It also meets UHS-I Speed Class 3 and Video Speed Class 30 specifications, suitable for 4K video recording, burst-mode still photos and game console use.

Capacities for Micron range from 128GB up to 1TB. The package size is 15mm x 11mm x 1mm. The c200 should be generally available in the second quarter.

The SanDisk kit is available on pre-order now, and will be available at "select retailers" in April. The MSRPs are $449.99 (c. £340 – though we can't predict how much they'll sell for in the UK) for the 1TB and $199.99 for the 512GB, respectively. ®
