Still using Azure Scheduler? Schedule in 30 September 2019 'cos it's being euthanised

Hi! I'm a task scheduler! Nobody really knows what I do until I stop doing it...

Another long-in-the-tooth Azure service was put on notice this week.

Azure Scheduler is (or, as of 30 September 2019, was) a service that did pretty much what it says on the tin. It fires off jobs through the likes of HTTP or HTTPS among others. Microsoft cited use cases such as pruning logs or performing backup tasks.

The Azure Scheduler recently celebrated its fifth birthday, but it does not look like it will make it to six. The gang at Redmond would much rather you spread your scheduling over Azure Logic Apps instead.

Logic Apps does the whole scheduling thing, but adds workflow functionality and a whizzy visual designer. It also handles time zones a little better - early incarnations of Azure Scheduler memorably didn't really understand things like daylight saving particularly well, a fact Microsoft tacitly admitted by highlighting "Set schedules that automatically adjust to daylight saving time" as a benefit of jumping to Logic Apps.

This is all scant comfort to admins used to setting up scheduled jobs and then pretty much forgetting about them unless something goes bang.

You see, there is no migration path. There may be some scripts to assist at some point, but for now admins must work on the basis that on 30 September, according to Microsoft, "All Scheduler job collections and jobs will be deleted from the system."

Ouch. The axeman cometh. ®
