Cisco snaps up Brit networking software bods Ensoft

From main customer to owner

Cisco is buying UK software house Ensoft for an undisclosed sum. The Harpenden-based outfit’s speciality is software for enterprise-grade routers and networking equipment.

The minnow, which among other things, develops features for Cisco’s IOS XR operating system, will be absorbed into Switchzilla’s Service Provider Networking Group, under senior veep Sumeet Arora.

Ensoft's other smarts include carrier-grade Ethernet, routing and switching protocols, according to its website, and it also scooped a high ranking in the Sunday Times’ list of best small companies to work for.

According to its last profit & loss set of accounts (PDF) for the year to April 2018 as filed at Companies House, the firm employs around 70 engineers, has revenues of £10.13m and post-tax profits of £2.96m – as its directors noted, "healthy".

It's not the biggest fish in the pond by a long chalk but its smarts have clearly made it attractive enough for a buyout, with Cisco already being its main customer.

The buyout will complete at the end of Q2 FY2019, assuming all goes to plan. ®
