Brit mobe operator O2 asks cut-off customers: Have you tried turning it on and off again?

Classic. But in the meantime, folk can't make or receive calls

Updated O2 customers have been reporting problems using their handsets on what's become a troublesome Thursday afternoon for the UK network operator.

The first whinges began rolling in at 16:15 BST, and Twitter was soon awash with angry customers finding their social umbilical cords severed.

Users reported their mobile phones showing a good signal, but found themselves unable to make or receive calls. Some also cited difficulty texting and a lack of mobile data. All in all, it does appear that O2 has a nationwide problem.

The Register contacted O2 (who thankfully have a landline) and the representative we spoke to was unaware of problems but promised to investigate. The firm's Twitter account soon swung into action, advising customers try, er, turning their phones off and on again.

Telefónica-owned O2 is the UK's second biggest operator. Getting all of its 25 million customers to reboot their device will present a bit of a challenge.

With even O2's own service status page reporting, "We're really sorry but this system is currently experiencing some technical problems," the network is clearly poorly. ®

Updated to add

O2 has finally taken to Twitter to admit that something did indeed go wrong.

Judging by the ongoing wailing on social media, 'some' could easily be swapped for 'lots of.' Let us know if you're still having problems.
