Blizzard blighted by another DDoS storm

Someone likes fragging servers

Blizzard, the game developer behind World of Warcraft and Overwatch, was hit by another DDoS attack on Tuesday.

The assault coincides with the final day of its Overwatch Summer Games event. In an update to an official Twitter account, Blizzard admitted the assault was affecting its ability to deliver services.

"We continue to actively monitor an ongoing DDOS attack against network providers, affecting latency/connections to our games," it said.

By late Tuesday afternoon, Blizzard put out an update saying the problem had been resolved.

A similar attack earlier this month affected games served through Battle.net, including Overwatch and World of Warcraft.

It's unclear who is behind the latest assault. No one has claimed responsibility.

Stephanie Weagle, senior director of marketing at DDoS mitigation outfit Corero Network Security, commented: "The online gaming industry is no stranger to DDoS attacks, as motivations, including player retaliation, are endless. For an industry that relies on player accessibility, DDoS attacks pose a serious challenge to game availability, [which] is actually the lifeblood of the organization." ®
