White House loves drones

The White House wants to encourage the use of drones and has put out some new guidelines to cover that explosion.

The Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) has released "New Commitments to Accelerate the Safe Integration of Unmanned Aircraft Systems." It includes: $35m in research; approval for various government departments to use drones more for things like search-and-rescue; and new privacy best practices [PDF].

The White House will also be holding a "workshop" Tuesday that will "bring together government, academic, and industry stakeholders to discuss both near- and long-term implications of unmanned aircraft as an emergent technology."

It is estimated that drone technology has the potential to add $82bn to the US economy over the next decade. ®
