Amazon drone tests in UK

Amazon.com has announced it's struck a deal with the United Kingdom's Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) that will see it “explore three key innovations: beyond line of sight operations in rural and suburban areas, testing sensor performance to make sure the drones can identify and avoid obstacles, and flights where one person operates multiple highly-automated drones.”

Amazon's canned statement is all we have to work with for now: the CAA is so far silent on the matter.

What the statement does tell us is that “... the CAA will be fully involved in this work to explore the potential for safe use of drones beyond line of sight. The outcomes of these tests will help inform the development of future policy and regulation in this area.”

CAA policy director Tim Johnson is quoted as saying the agency is keen on the tests because they will “help inform our policy and future approach.” ®
