Android malware blocks bank calls

Cybercrooks have put together a fake banking application that blocks victims’ outgoing calls to customer service.

The Fakebank trojan blocks calls in order to stop victims from cancelling their stolen payment cards. The Android nasty is automatically programmed to cancel calls from being placed. Victims can, of course, use other channels to reach customer care centres such as landlines or email.

The tactic is essentially a time delaying ploy that grants crooks with a little extra time in cashing out compromised cards. Variants of the malware seen thus far have targeted financial institutions in Russia and South Korea.
