TCL plots ramp-up in India, mulls manufacturing

Hopes to climb the smartphone market

Chinese vendor TCL is the latest to signal an interest in manufacturing in India.

Best known as the owner of the Alcatel Onetouch brand, and number 10 smartphone vendor worldwide (which currently leaves it languishing among “other” in most market surveys), the company has told India's Economic Times it's set itself a US$100 million sales target in the country.

If it can hit its targets, TCL told the news outlet it would then consider either setting up its own manufacturing plant, or cutting deals with local contract manufacturers.

The company recently launched the first phone to carry its own brand, the TCL 560, which Indian customers can get for 7,999 rupees (a little under US$120).

The Android Marshmallow-based mobe is a 5.5” unit with eye-scans for security, and a fairly standard spec for the price range – stuff like an 8 megapixel rear camera, 4 megapixel front camera.

The TCL 560 is selling only through Amazon, as will future TCL-branded phones (the company plans another three launches this year, its regional director for India Praveen Valecha told the Economic Times).

As the newspaper notes, TCL's reach goes beyond phones, with TVs, washing machines, and refrigerators under its banner. ®
