Brexit-themed spam surges

Symantec has uncovered a fivefold (392 per cent) increase in spam emails that use Brexit as a news hook.

Cybercriminals have latched onto Brexit as a theme simply because it’s topical and likely to get the attention of prospective marks.

These lures are ultimately geared towards tricking people into divulging sensitive information or visiting hacker-controlled sites hosting malware exploit kits.

Between 9 and 23 June, the number of Brexit-themed emails detected and blocked by Symantec was 81,323. This number increased considerably to 399,892 between 24 June and 5 July. ®
