Pulsant swallows Onyx – just like we told you they would

Data centre and cloud biz weds data centre and cloud biz

Bit barn and cloud services seller Pulsant has confirmed this morning it has devoured fellow data centre services business Onyx.

Financial terms were not disclosed but when The Channel exclusively revealed the agreement some weeks ago, our sources told us £65m had changed hands.

The buy gives Pulsant an expanded base with server farms in Yorkshire, two in Newcastle, Edinburgh and Glasgow, and eight workplace recovery units in the UK.

Onyx uses these DCs to sell cloud backup, cloud and managed hosting, co-location, connectivity, IT support and managed services.

Business continuity and on-site support are new strands for Pulsant, but it said on-site managed services and security will be beefed up by the acquisition.

Pulsant operates in the same game, selling co-lo, cloud, connectivity, and hosting services. It was formerly branded Lumison, and has acquired DediPower, BlueSquare Data and ScoLocate.

The expanded business will employ circa 400 staff, have revenues of roughly £75m and more than 4,000 punters, with ones from the Onyx stables including Newcastle FC, Stobart Group and DFS.

Former Telecity CEO Mike Tobin has been appointed as chairman at Pulsant meaning that the existing holder of that title, Pieter Knook, will serve as deputy chairman.

Pulsant CEO Mark Howling did not reply to call for comment, and Onyx CEO Neil Stephenson hung up when we rang his mobile. ®
