AT&T expanding 5G trials

Want a 10 Gbps 5G wireless connection? Buy a home in a wireless lab, like AT&T's, where it claims to have hit that speed.

The operator also says it's expanding the trials it's been conducting with vendors Ericsson and Nokia, with fixed outdoor tests slated for Texas and New Jersey later this year.

Nokia's also involved in the trials, providing millimetre-wave technology for the development effort.

A new bunch of locations for outdoor trials have been added to the list as well. As well as the lab tests in Austin, Texas, AT&T is starting system and software architecture work in Middletown, New Jersey, Atlanta, Georgia, and San Ramon, California.

AT&T notes that the 3GPP should have its first phase of 5G standardisation on the table by 2018. ®
