Longer wait for new iPhones?

Apple could be changing the way it rolls out new iPhone models.

A report by Nikkei claims Apple will adopt a three-year product cycle for its flagship handsets, rather than the current two-year cycle that sees a major refresh every other Fall.

So rather than, say, the iPhone 8 followed by the iPhone 8S the next year and then the iPhone 9, an extra stage will be inserted to pad the line out by an extra year before the next major update – call it the iPhone 8SX or something.

Such a move would buy Apple more time to develop major changes for the iPhone, but could also lead to waning interest from consumers in yearly updates that would become more incremental. ®
