Brazil lifts WhatsApp ban

WhatsApp is no longer banned in Brazil after an appeals judge in the South American nation reversed an earlier ruling.

On Monday, a Brazilian judge ordered the Facebook-owned messaging service to be shut down across the country for 72 hours. It's understood WhatsApp had refused to hand over messages to cops investigating an alleged crime. The whole situation was wrapped in secrecy rules, leaving the millions of Brazilians relying on the chat app in the dark.

On Tuesday, however, Judge Abreu Lima overturned the earlier ban, put in place by Judge Marcel Montalvao, but did not explain why. WhatsApp bosses in Brazil are due to meet the country's government to discuss que diabos is going on. ®
