QNB confirms breach

Qatar National Bank has confirmed a customer data leak.

News of the leak of customer data first emerged last week, as The Register reported. After first being deleted from its original drop-site, the 500 MB zipfile was posted to Cryptome.org.

The following day, the bank said it was investigating the leak.

The bank has now issued this statement, in which it says “some of the data released in the public domain may be accurate”.

As The Register suggested last week, the mix of data suggests someone was trawling both the QNB's data and other sources (such as social media profiles) for information about individuals.

The QNB reckons the attackers wanted to smear it: “We believe the nature of this incident is fundamentally an attempted attack on QNB Group’s reputation and not specifically targeted at our customers”, the statement says.

The statement says the attack will have “no financial impact” on its customers, and that it's engaged a third party to review its system security. ®
