Dropbox desktop blur

At Tuesday's Dropbox Open London conference, the cloudy storage company took the wraps off Project Infinite – which displays cloud and local storage files alongside each other.

When users check their file lists on Windows or OS X, they can see locally stored files marked with a green tick mark, but also items stored in the cloud. Those files can be accessed by simply doubleclicking the icon.

"With Project Infinite, we're addressing a major issue our users have asked us to solve. The amount of information being created and shared has exploded, but most people still work on devices with limited storage capacity," said Genevieve Sheehan, project manager at Dropbox.

"While teams can store terabyte upon terabyte in the cloud, most individuals' laptops can only store a small fraction of that. Getting secure access to all the team's data usually means jumping over to a web browser, a clunky user experience at best."

No date has been given as yet for deployment of the service. ®
