Google takes old Chrome versions on that long drive in the country

Tumbril rumbles for Windows XP and pre-Yosemite users

Google has given Windows XP and old versions of Apple OS X their marching orders.

Support for the ancient (in the case of XP) / no-longer-supported (OS X Mountain Lion and older) operating systems will end in April 2016.

The Chocolate Factory announced the decision here.

Google's original EOL date for XP was to be April 2015, but it relented just before the hammer fell.

Even now, there are bound to be some user complaints. In spite of every hint, threat, promise, offer and plea, Netmarketshare reports that 11.68 per cent of the world's Web traffic still comes from browsers on XP.

Mac users are much better disposed to an upgrade, it seems: while the same report gives OS X 10.10 (Yosemite) 3.45 per cent and (El Capitan) 2.18 per cent share, older versions have already fallen into the “other” category.

After the EOL, “Chrome will continue to function on these platforms but will no longer receive updates and security fixes”, writes Chrome director of engineering Marc Pawliger.

“If you are still on one of these unsupported platforms, we encourage you to move to a newer operating system to ensure that you continue to receive the latest Chrome versions and features.” ®
