Teenage boy bailed until November over TalkTalk incident

No clarification on charges, as of yet

The 15-year-old boy arrested in connection with the investigation into the alleged data theft from the TalkTalk website has been bailed until a date in November.

Arrested on the evening of Monday, 26 October, a 15-year-old was taken into custody by officers from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), working alongside detectives from the Metropolitan Police Cyber Crime Unit (MPCCU).

The Register understands a search warrant was executed at an address in County Antrim, as part of an investigation conducted by MPCCU detectives, alongside the PSNI's Cyber Crime Centre (CCC) and the National Crime Agency.

Following the arrest of the boy on suspicion of offences under the Computer Misuse Act, TalkTalk's latest statement claimed that "cyber criminals are becoming increasingly sophisticated and attacks against companies that do business online are becoming increasingly frequent".

It is not yet clear whether the arrest relates to the alleged data theft, or to a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack targeting the TalkTalk.co.uk site.

TalkTalk has stated: "We know this has been a worrying time for customers and we are grateful for the swift response and hard work of the police. We will continue to assist in the ongoing investigation." ®

The Register has created a timeline of TalkTalk's contradictory comments following on from the initial announcement of a website outage.
