Pivotal brings its labs to Asia, starting in Australia and Japan

UPDATE EMC Federation member Pivotal will brings its “Labs” consultancy services to Australia and Japan.

Australia gets a joint ventures with Telstra. Japan's effort is owned by Pivotal, but will kick off with foundation client Toshiba Solutions.

Melissa Ries, Pivotal's veep and general manager for Asia, tells us the labs start out small with perhaps half a dozen folks aboard. The first clutch of workers are imports who inculcate locals in the Pivotal Labs way of doing things, which emphasises agile development and use of Pivotal's Cloud Foundry PaaS and analytics products.

Ries could not reveal the extent of Pivotal or Telstra's investment in the Australian joint venture, which is expected to open after the November debut of the Japan Lab in Tokyo.

Ries struggled, in conversation with The Reg, to explain just how Pivotal Labs delivers value beyond that other consultancies can offer, but volunteered rigour and a methodology that teaches clients how to improve and hasten their software development efforts as offerings she thinks will be appreciated by Australian and Japanese customers.

There's some proof of concept for that assertion: Telstra was a customer before it became Pivotal Labs joint venturers. ®

Pivotal's been in touch to tell us that they didn't give us the whole story in the interview we conducted or the press release sent before that interview.

It turns out that in Australia there will be one Pivotal Lab in Sydney, jointly owned and operated by Pivotal and Telstra. In Melbourne, Telstra will operate its own lab where Pivotal's methodologies will be offered.

In Japan, Pivotal will operate a lab all by itself in Tokyo. Toshiba Solutions will also run a lab offering Pivotal's methodologies.
