Tech Data Mobile has confirmed that former Phones4U director Matt Child has taken control of the UK arm, replacing previous exec Peter Hubbard who has now left the building.

Child was commercial director at the retailer until it went under last autumn, and since then was COO at Leeds United football. Prior to those roles he was sales director at distie 20:20 Mobile Group.

This is the third boss to sit in the TD Mobile hot seat in a little more than two years following the departure of Jim Michel in 2013 and the more recent exit of former Dell man Hubbard.

In a note sent to us, Child said he was previously a customer of TD Mobile when he was at Phones4U - before it went bust - but despite this trotted out the classic cliche that the distie’s skills are a “well kept secret”.

TD UK boss Andy Gass, who replaced Hubbard in the top job last year - effectively his third stint in the role - gave Child the customary verbal pat on the back, talking up his “extensive experience” in mobile tech.

“He [Child] is very well placed to lead Tech Data Mobile through the next phase of growth and development,” said Gass.

Here’s hoping he lasts longer than the others.

Tech disties started to get into the mobile phone game some years back - Tech Data set up a European joint venture with Brightstar that it now owns outright and Ingram Micro acquired Brightpoint. ®
