Exetel becomes Exit-tel, shows customers the door without explanation

'We wish you every success in the future', now go away, says Australian ISP.

Australian internet service provider (ISP) Exetel is firing customers, with no explanation for its actions.

Customers have sent Vulture South a “Notice of termination of service” from Exetel that offers the following non-explanation of the decision:

Service number: XX XXXX XXXX 10 June 2015 - Today's Date 10 July 2015 - Termination Date

Exetel has made a commercial decision to cease supplying services to your address, and is giving you the 30 days contractually required notice of the termination of your service(s).

This notice period is in accordance with relevant Federal legislation (Telecommunications Act) and industry standards.

As per the Terms and Conditions of your service located at http://www.exetel.com.au/terms "12.4 If the Agreement is a non Fixed-Term Agreement, Exetel may cancel the Service at any time by giving the Customer at least thirty (30) days' notice."

You should organise to churn/transfer your ADSL/Phone service to another carrier on or before the termination date. We wish you every success in the future.

One user told The Register he's a low downloader and not a user of virtual private networks, potentially important factors given Exetel has been known to ask heavy torrenters or downloaders to move on. The ISP's Acceptable Use Policy (PDF) looks, on our reading, to give it the right to terminate accounts if such services are employed.

As this Whirlpoool thread demonstrates, some very heavy downloaders have been canned in recent weeks, but as the thread rolls on, it also features several users who don't feel they “deserve” termination.

The Reg has contacted Exetel to inquire about the extent of its account terminations and reasons for doing so, and wishes the company every success in the future. ®
