HP flash splash at National Association of Broadcasters bash

OEMs Samsung tech, announces new flash-equipped workstations

HP has been flashing at the National Association of Broadcasters' event in Las Vegas, announcing desktop PCIe SSDs for media mavens to manipulate their massive files.

The Z Turbo Drive G2 is a PCIe NVMe flash device using Samsung M.2 PCIe tech, which more than doubles the speed of its gen-1 predecessor, delivering "four times traditional SATA SSD performance at a cost that’s remarkably similar", HP said.

Technical details include:

  • 256GB or 512GB capacities in HH-HL form factor
  • NVMe PCIe Gen 3.0 x4
  • 300,000 random read 4K IOPS
  • 100,000 random write 4K IOPS
  • 2.51GB per sec sequential read bandwidth
  • Up to 1.55GB per sec sequential write bandwidth
  • Endurance of 146TB total bytes written (80 GB per day for five years – 256GB), 292TB (160 GB per day for five years – 512GB product)

Samsung hasn't announced any NVMe PCIe product with these specs and it may be an overhauled SM951 product developed specially for HP.

HP says its Z840, Z640 and Z440 desktop workstations can be made more powerful and expanded by installing the Z Turbo Drive G2 flash drive plus high-capacity SATA HDDs and SSDs.

It also announced its OMEN Pro mobile workstation, which includes Z Turbo Drive PCIe flash storage, DreamColour Z32x 4K display and Ultra-Narrow Bezel Z27n, Z25n, Z24n, Z24nf and Z24nq displays; borderless screens designed for a seamless multi-display setup in either landscape or portrait mode.

The Z Turbo Drive – data sheet here (pdf) - should be available starting in June, with 256GB costing $399 and the 512GB model $699. Higher capacities are expected in the future.

The ultra-narrow bezel displays should be ready in June also, the Z32x Dream Colour display in the summer (meaning after June we think), while the OMEN Pro is ready now and starts at $2,199. ®
