Bongfire of Inanity: Jakarta rozzers enforce mass chill-out

Pizza consumption and short-term friendships rise

A community in West Jakarta was left dazed, confused and peckish after the local rozzers decided to "destroy" three and a half tonnes of cannabis on a bonfire.

A series of drug seizures by the West Jakartan Palmerah plod netted over 1.8 kilograms of methamphetamine and 2,500 ecstasy pills, as well as several tonnes of wacky tobaccy.

The police force took the cannabis into a field to be destroyed, but journalists and locals who gathered to watch the burning reported feeling funny (you don't say) as they inhaled the fumes.

The smoke from the bonfire initially rose away from onlookers but was then dispersed by the wind around the neighborhood, causing headaches and dizziness.

The police wore protective breathing apparatus for the burning, but did not seem to think of warning local residents about the consequences of the chosen method of disposal.

One resident complained to The Jakarta Post that he "got a headache because I wasn't wearing a mask."

The haul of drugs was described the largest West Jakarta police had ever brought in, although their estimate of its worth, almost $17bn, seems extreme.

The crystal methamphetamine and ecstasy pills were reportedly destroyed in a blender.

Capital punishment is available in Indonesian courts for those producing, importing, trafficking, or merely possessing narcotic and psychotropic drugs. ®
