Juniper, Mirantis get cloud-cozy

Juniper Networks and Mirantis are getting cozy in an arrangement designed to get better scalability out of OpenStack clouds.

The two outfits announced the tie-up at the end of last week, with Mirantis saying the relationship will bake Juniper's Contrail into its OpenStack environment.

Contrail will sit alongside the existing Mirantis support for VMware's NSX, letting customers choose between the two networking stacks in their OpenStack cloud.

The company says Contrail support is aimed at customers that aren't “hard-core VMware shops”.

Contrail “enables a multi-hypervisor environment, and … can also be used to control compatible hardware switches”, Mirantis continues. Mirantis is also keen on its support for the Data Plane Development Kit and the Open vSwitch Database Management Protocol.

Virtual switching and routing, with L2 and L3 support and interoperability with both Juniper and Cisco routers (supporting Layer 3 VPNs) are also cited as attractions of Contrail.

Mirantis has been working on building up its partner list. In February, it commenced a joint project with Google to integrate the Kubernetes container management and orchestration code with its Murano OpenStack Application Catalogue.

That integration is designed to get Kubernetes applications up and running fast. ®
