Nest seeks audio talent to delight … someone

Home audio about to get Googled, aren't you thrilled?

Google subsidiary Nest has decided the next thing to be Internet of Thinged is going to be the sound system, and wants to get there first.

Shortly after irritating Dropcam users by telling them to create a Nest account – even if they don't own any Nest product – Nest has posted advertisements seeking someone to head up Nest Audio.

The boss of the noisy Nest will run a team covering “acoustics, audio electronics, audio SW, audio test and validation” to deliver “delightful user experiences and innovative features” (don't blame The Register for the emetic phraseology).

Since the team will be asked to “redefine consumer audio experiences”, we'd suppose that eventually you'll be able to turn up the volume without having to cross the room and turn a knob: instead, the “delightful” experience will be to grab the phone, log into the Nest account, and use that to control the system.

What you won't be able to do is run any putative Nest Audio from a Dropcam account: they're being killed off within three months.

As Pando notes, that means Dropcam users are going to be subject to the Nest T&Cs – and have some of their data shared with The Chocolate Factory for advertising purposes – whether they like it or not.

Just imagine: having Nest Audio might one day mean getting asked by your stereo “you're listening to Taylor Swift. Would you like to try Taylor Swift next?” ®
