Juniper, Amdocs show off vCPE

Router, firewall and orchestrator playing nice

MWC 2015 Juniper Networks has placed both feet under the Network Function Virtualisation, using Mobile World Congress as the venue to demonstrate virtual customer premises equipment (vCPE).

The solution it demonstrated in conjunction with Amdocs is based on the virtualised version of its MX router, first announced in November 2014, and a virtual version of its SRX firewall.

The JunOS-based vSRX Firefly firewall covers basic functions like IPSec VPN, NAT, QoS and routing integration, threat management and intrusion prevention, and supports multiple CPUs, virtual NICs, and session-based forwarding.

For the demo, Amdocs contributed its Network Cloud Service Orchestrator, that company's pitch at carrier virtualisation.

Amdocs describes the orchestrator as an “open catalogue-based” system designed to let carriers put services in front of customers, instead of having to go through conventional order-configure-fulfilment processes.

The two vendors worked together on a user self-service portal, service catalogue, and service creation capability, Juniper says.

Amdocs' veep of product and solutions marketing Rebecca Prudhomme says the demonstration shows the two companies can enable “programmable service chains that bring together the physical and virtual networks.”

Which may not sound impressive, but is a noteworthy realisation of the NFV vision of deploying services to customers on-demand, instead of requiring painful provisioning processes.

Juniper has also expanded its collaboration with Canonical, announcing a carrier-grade OpenStack implementation using Ubuntu Server OS and OpenStack in combination with Juniper's Contrail Cloud solution. ®
