Juniper targets LTE deployments with carrier switches

Also expands network management

Juniper has opened the gate to let a couple of carrier routers out of the cage, along with enhancements to its Junos Space network management system.

The two devices – the ACX500 and ACX5000 – target mobile backbone networks.

The ACX500 is designed for routing traffic from small scale base stations, with system throughput of 6 Gbps and six gigabit Ethernet ports that can be configured as four copper / two fibre, or three each of copper and fibre.

It's available in indoor or outdoor configurations, and supports carrier Ethernet, MPLS, traffic engineering, and Call Admission Control.

There's integrated MAC-layer security under 802.1ae, and 5 microsecond timing phase accuracy for LTE and LTE-Advanced deployments. An integrated GPS receiver improves call handoff between base stations to cut down irritations like dropped calls.

The aggregation-layer ACX5000 comes in 48 10Gbps / 6 40 Gbps Ethernet and 96 10 Gbps / 8 40 Gbps Ethernet versions, with throughput of 1.44 or 2.56 Tbps respectively.

The ACX5000 has multiple targets: small or standard cells, as well as residential or commercial broadband.

Juniper highlights the switch's Kernel Virtual Machine (KVM)-compliant network function virtualisation (NFV) support, allowing carriers to create services like security, network analytics, and subscriber functions.

Wrapping up the announcement, the two new devices have been added to the supported list for the Junos Space Connectivity Services Director and Cross Provisioning Platform environments, for automated carrier Ethernet service provisioning. ®
