The Order: 1886 – Round Table gaming's all right on the knight

'Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries!'

Trigger happy?

The way this fight works involves me flicking the right thumbstick in a certain direction when prompted and the right triggers for a heavy or light attack – pretty basic stuff and this lowest common denominator skillset will be disappointing for some.

"You grab the undies and I'll take the towel"

What is the connection between the Half-Breeds and the rebels? If only Sherlock Holmes weren’t passed out in Baker Street… No matter what you may have heard prior to release, there are a lot of things to like about The Order: 1886 and, while playing, I constantly asked myself whether the game would be improved by being more open world. Is it less fun due to the lack of levelling and upgrades?

Despite negative rumours stoking up plenty of clickbait out there, going into The Order: 1886 I was aware that it was a linear single player experience with a constructed narrative and can be more positive about the game as a result.

"Sackboy, what are you doing here?"

This is not an inspired game and there’s nothing new here (sorry, Sony), but ultimately I had fun playing this game. Unfortunately, it was not £50's worth of fun, especially since I feel it doesn’t have the replay value of a game like Wolfenstein.

The Reg Verdict

Yet one of the great things about this game is that I can finish it and feel good about completing it. Experiencing the weaving and often thrilling narrative from beginning to end is the point, rather than making a huge open world 80-hour game just for the sake of it.

Must be an election year...

I can promise it won’t be stuck on the shelf with all those other games that are impossible to finish if you have a day job. I reckon this interactive immersive sinister yarn will entertain you for longer than five hours, no matter what YouTube says. Alternating current FTW! ®
