Woz moves to Oz

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has become a permanent resident of Australia.

“Woz” has lived in Australia on and off for a few years now and recently picked up a gig as an adjunct professor at Sydney's University of Technology. According to The Australian Financial Review he's now taken the plunge and moved down under to become, if you will, The Woz-ard of Oz.

Better still, the Fin reports Woz may well choose to live in Tasmania, a state often referred to as “The Apple Isle” thanks to a cool climate that makes growing cider-stuff sensible.

If Woz does make the move, he won't lack for distinguished company: Violent Femmes bassist Brian Ritchie moved to Tasmania a few years back and now hangs out with gambling-hack-millionaire-turned-art-curator David Walsh at the technology-infused Museum of Old and New Art (MONA).

It's not all alternative music and hipster galleries in Tasmania: Wozniak's new home has Australia's highest unemployment rate. On the upside, the island boasts a stunning sub-alpine region, is a source of magnificent wines and food, has beaches to die for (even if the water temperature leaves a bit to be desired) and was the first State in Australia to receive fibre-to-the-premises internet connections as part of Australia's National Broadband Network rollout. ®
