LG teases 'G Watch' wristable, releases new tablet trio

Another entry into the 'product searching for a reason to exist' smartwatch category

LG Electronics – manufacturer of everything from electric vehicle traction motors to vacuum cleaners to smartphones – has released a video teasing a few details about its upcoming G Watch wearable, and has unveiled three new tablets in 7-, 8-, and 10.1-inch sizes.

"Customers tell us that they want a wider range of devices that offer sizable screens without compromising portability,” said LG mobile communications president and CEO Jong-seok Park in a statement.

"Unlike smartphones," Park said, "tablets are not one size fits all."

The Reg will pass on the inaccuracy of that latter comment, and merely report that LG's new G Pad 7.0, G Pad 8.0, and G Pad 10.1 rather nicely expand the purchasing options of LG tablet fanciers beyond that of their current G Pad 8.3 – and we assume you can deduce the display size of that fondleslab.

According to LG, the smallest of the three new tabs is "designed to be held in one hand," the middle model provides an "immersive multimedia experience and smooth multitasking," and the big boy will supply "endless hours of entertainment and fun."

Although the LG announcement does report that the G Pad 10.1 has a bigger battery than its fellows, it doesn't note exactly how "endless" those hours will be on a single charge.

LG does say, however, that all three tablets will come with an updated version of the company's QPair tech – called QPair 2.0, natch – which enables a Bluetooth connection between the devices and an Android smartphone to access calls and messages, and to respond from the G Pad. Also supported is LG's Knock Code, which enables you to unlock the device by tapping a pattern of up to eight, well, knocks.

More details about the tablet trio will be announced in different geographies "in the weeks ahead," perhaps when the world learns more about the G Watch, which some observers say may be revealed later this month.

The G Watch teaser video released this weekend doesn't provide much information, however:

From it we learn that the wristable wearable will be "compatible" with Android, will have a metal body "for a timeless look," will be waterproof, and – somewhat puzzlingly uninformative, will be "Ready for anything, anytime, with a single charge."

As with the new G Pads, how long that charge will last – or, for that matter how much LG will charge for the G Watch – remains unknown.

As Engadget notes, however, the French gadget website Les Numeriques reports (Google Translate) that the G Watch will run 199€ (~$275) in France and will be available in June.
