Atmos: Give us your tired, your poor... Heck, our cloud will even take that S3 app

Rolls out native support for Amazon S3 API, CIFS cloud gateway too

EMC has launched a hat-trick of Atmos updates: new hardware, new software and new interfaces. The system holds 33 per cent more data, chews through it more quickly and provides more and faster ways of getting to it. Potential customers can try Atmos software out using a virtual edition running on any VMware-certified storage.

Atmos is EMC's object storage hardware/software platform for cloud service providers.

Third-generation Atmos hardware, the Atmos G3-Dense-480 product, has an improved X86 processing hardware, 10GbitE support and comes in rack-based configs with 4, 6 or 8 nodes. The G3-Dense-480 has 480 x 3TB disks in 40U, and comes "standard racked, cabled, and pre-configured for easy serviceability and fit within datacenters." It is the densest Atmos platform with 4.323PB of raw capacity.

We might imagine 4TB drives are not far away either.

Atmos 2.1 sofware supports the REST API as before, and now supports Amazon's S3 API natively. Customers can migrate their S3 applications to more than 40 Atmos-powered public clouds around the world and private Atmos clouds, and vice versa. Atmos service providers can now offer Atmos alternatives to the Amazon S3 service.

Windows CIFS gateway support comes with Atmos GeoDrive Windows 1.1, a value-added package "that provides instant Windows access to any Atmos powered storage cloud. It has shareable URLs for improved collaboration , "easy drag and drop file capabilities to build your own “cloud” drive," and is available in 10 languages. EMC says it has "Microsoft clustering for high availability and added data encryption for … cloud security."

There are three new Atmos configs, including a virtual Atmos:

  • Atmos CE - Complete Edition - is the full Atmos deal for distributed locations, with "multi-site active/active, multi-tenancy, and full policy controls."
  • Atmos LE - Light Edition - is "a subset of Atmos functionality [for] cloud archive and centralised data centers, including 2 sites, 1 tenant/1 subtenant, and limited policy controls."
  • Atmos VE - Virtual Edition - provides Atmos CE "deployed on any VMware-certified third-party storage, including EMC Celerra, CLARiiON, Symmetrix, VNX, VNXe, and Isilon."

Now you can try Atmos software out on existing EMC or other VMware-certified storage, virtual object storage, before buying Atmos hardware.

The Atmos G3-Dense-480 Hardware, Atmos 2.1 Software and GeoDrive Windows 1.1 are available immediately. ®
