HP offers Emulex FCoE adaptors
Emulex has at last got blue chip OEM blessing for its Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) adapters, with HP now offering the kit.
FCoE is reckoned to be the future of Fibre Channel networking, with the protocol being carried on a 10GbitE wire instead of native Fibre Channel wires and Host Bus Adapters (HBAs). FCoE runs across an upgraded Ethernet NIC called a Converged Network Adapter (CNA). Emulex's OneConnect CNAs are available either as 10GbitE-only or as FCoE CNAs. So far, although several OEMS, including IBM, have certified the Ethernet functionality, none has explicitly certified the FCoE aspect of the CNAs functionality.
Verari did certify the FCoE functionality late last year but then promptly collapsed. Emulex competitor QLogic has racked up several OEM certifications for its CNA, not least with IBM, leaving Emulex lagging. With an HP win under its belt things could be looking up for Emulex, which needs to produce good trading results to justify its rejection of Broadcom's acquisition attempt last year.
HP will ship the Emulex CNA with some ProLiant rack, tower and blade servers, and they are also available on their own from HP, branded as HP products. ®
