Dell spreads the channel love with distie big guns

Hires Ingram and Tech Data in US

Dell is signed up Ingram Micro and Tech Data in the US to wholesale Vostro desktops and notebooks in the US. The same disties go live with Dell in Canada in the next few weeks.

Ingram and Tech Data will purportedly carry stock at prices that allow resellers to offer kit that prices competitively against Dell direct. If true, this shows that Dell, the one-time Diva of Direct, really wants these distie gigs to work out.

You can read the press release here. But the sub-text is that Dell needs these distie giants to propel a channel assault into the small and medium-sized business sectors. Dell has only been serious about building a channel for a year, but it already claims 35,000 partners worldwide. Not bad at all. But this is probably fewer than HP, say, has signed up in the US alone.

So Ingram and Tech Data keep the Dell channel momentum going; they offer logistics firepower, more reseller customers, and, especially important these days, additional credit lines.

Will Dell come knocking on the door of Ingram and Tech Data (Computer 2000) is called here, in the UK. Almost certainly, if the North American experience goes well. ®
