Dell hits the shelves in the US

Dips toe in indirect waters...

Dell, famous for its rigourous direct-only model, is off-loading some old kit through discount wholesaler CostCo.

The US-only deal is the first time punters can buy Dell machines straight off the shelf - previously they were sold only through Costco's website and promoted in stores.

Costco is offering Dell Dimension 4700 and Inspiron 2200 machines for $899 each. More details on IDG here.

Dell has flirted in the past with non-direct routes to market like retail partners and auction sites but has stayed loyal to its direct sales strategy.

Analysts have long predicted the imminent demise of Dell's direct-sales business model. They argue that Dell's inventory control, to keep prices low, is now matched by other vendors. Observers claim Dell needs to get more service and consulting revenue to compete. More from CRN here.

A spokeswoman for Dell UK confirmed the deal was US-only.®
