AMD trims Opteron prices

One-way server chips get cheaper

AMD quietly cut the prices of its Opteron 1xx 64-bit server processor family yesterday - the company's third round of price adjustments in seven days.

The latest cuts affect all but the top-most dual-core and single-core Opteron 1xx chips, the 180 and 152. All the rest, both single- and dual-core, saw their prices reduced by between 10.4 per cent and 33.3 per cent.

The change to AMD's official price list comes exactly a week after the chip maker lowered prices across its mobile processor line-ups, its Sempron budget desktop CPU range and its selection of dual-core desktop Athlon X2 processors. The prices were pruned by up to 26 per cent.

Three days later, it also updated the price list to reflect new Athlon 64 desktop price adjustments, knocking up to 20 per cent off what it charges for the chips.

AMD last made significant processor price cuts in August. ®
