Next-gen Nvidia nuggets appear on Web

NV17, NV25

Details of Nvidia's next-generation GeForce graphics processor have leaked onto the Web. Numerous sites have passed the information down the line, but the source appears to be German magazine c't.

The technology will apparently be offered in two forms: a low-end part codenamed NV17 and a high-end chip codenamed NV25.

The NV17's specs shouldn't surprise anyone, since the match those of the next-generation mobile part Nvidia announced at Comdex a few weeks back, the NV17M. Like the NV17M, the NV17 supports up to 64MB of DDR SDRAM and has a clock speed to 250MHz.

The NV17M is said to be the successor to the GeForce 2 Go, so we assume it's a GeForce 3-class mobile part. Given the size of the current GeForce 3, that means the NV17M will almost certainly be fabbed at 0.13 micron - or is being so made, since Nvidia claims the part is already in volume production.

The NV17 appears to be a 0.13 micron part too, as does the NV25, which is being described in some quarters as the GeForce 4. The NV17 is said to be a replacement for the GeForce 2 MX, and is again all about bringing DirectX 8.1 functionality to the mid-range.

The c't story mentions four graphics cards from Elsa: two dubbed the Synergy IV, the other two under the Gloria IV moniker. The Synergy boards are based on 250MHz and 300MHz NV17s, with 32MB of 200MHz DDR SDRAM and 64MB of 300MHz DDR SDRAM, respectively.

The first Gloria IV is based on a 275MHz NV25 with 128MB of 250MHz DDR SDRAM, the second on a 330MHz NV25 with the same amount of 300MHz memory.

The NV25 is expected to be announced early next year, with boards based on the part shipping during Q2 - roughly speaking, that's 12 months after the GeForce 3's introduction and shipment. ®
