The skinny on super slim Compaq PC

Silver and Black

Compaq is to start 2002 by shipping a super slim desktop PC - the system unit is 12-inches square and 2.72 inches thick.

The slick silver and black Evo D500 weighs 11 pounds and Compaq has got the mufflers out, reducing its internal noises to a 28 dB sound level, which is more than 50 per cent quieter than the company's previous generation of desktops.

The machine includes integrated wireless connectivity via Compaq's MultiPort technology, and will support both Intel Celerons and P4s. It's got USB, VGA, and Ethernet ports, but no serial, parallel, and PS/2 ports.

The Evo D500 line also features a MultiBay for hot-swapping removable storage devices such as floppy disk, CD-ROM, CD-RW or DVD drives. The MultiBay technology is the same as Compaq uses in its Evo notebooks, which means you can swap devices between your notebook and your PC.

The Evo D500 will be out in early 2002 in the US and Europe. No pricing details yet. ®
