Win XP doesn't work with WorksSuite Money 2001

System builders may delay XP launch

Updated There is a very serious issue with Microsoft's WorksSuite Money 2001 product working on Windows XP - it doesn't. And this means system builders may delay selling XP based machines.

Money 2001 is a component of Microsoft's WorksSuite 2001, which is a common software option on many system builders’ machines. The other Works package, Works 6.0, does not contain a version of Money.

The Register has quizzed several UK system builders and they are all facing the problem of whether they'll be able to ship XP come the launch date.

One major UK player told us: "We won't be shipping something that doesn't work. How can you sell XP when the WorksSuite doesn't work."

The solution seems to be relatively simple; users will have to replace Money 2001 with Money 2002, which is compatible with Windows XP. Presumably, system builders offering the WorksSuite 2001 as a bundle will advise customers about the upgrade to Money 2002, and may include the product as part of the system. We are uncertain at present as to whether there will be any cost implications involved with this, and are waiting to hear Microsoft's official line on the situation.

However the Money 2002 solution isn't going to work for the customer who's already got a Windows ME system with WorksSuite 2001, and just wants to upgrade to XP.

Update

Since initially posting the report, a number of users have mailed us saying that they have been running Windows XP with Money 2001 without any hassle at all. Most do specify that theirs is the standalone version though, rather than the bundled WorksSuite edition. ®
