Dell gets curious about AMD merits
Considering a chip switch for home PCs?
Dell has started asking consumers if they would prefer AMD rather than Intel chips in their PCs.
The Intel-only vendor has set up an online quiz entitled "Intel vs. AMD Research Survey", asking users about the pros and cons of the two companies' chips.
"If you were purchasing a new personal computer for your household today, which one of the following processors would you MOST prefer and why?" one question asks.
Multiple choice answers on offer include AMD Athlon or Duron, Intel Celeron, Pentium III or IV, or PowerPC chips.
It also prompts respondents to compare Intel and AMD chips on factors such as reliability, speed, performance, value and innovation.
The final question asks: "Assume you are in the process of purchasing a new desktop computer for your home. Also assume that the two desktop computers you are considering have IDENTICAL product features with one exception.
"One desktop computer has an Intel Pentium III 1GHz processor and is priced at $1099. The second desktop computer has an AMD Athlon 1GHz processor and is priced at $1049. Which computer would you MOST prefer?"
Dell today claimed the survey was "standard policy", saying it did not mean it was considering changing its Intel stance.
"We always look at different options in the marketplace," said James Griffiths, Dell UK client product marketing manager.
"We want to make sure that what customers buy is giving them value for money," he added. ®
