Time follows Tiny with home entertainment box

But PC/TVs didn't sell last time around

Time Computers has followed Tiny Computers into the digital home entertainment field.

Tiny launched its Takami box - a PC, TV, DVD player, video, and MP3 player - at the Ideal Home Exhibition yesterday.

Time has followed by announcing its 'Player' and describes it as a 'powerful PC, hi-fi music centre with CD-player, Games console, DVD video player, powerful Internet terminal and connects to your TV.'

Obviously they think its very powerful. Here's the specs.

For £499 you get a 700MHz AMD processor (probably a Duron), 64Mb RAM, 20Gb hard drive, DVD, Windows ME, 56K modem, and a standard mouse and keyboard. It connects to your TV.

Colin Silcock, National Sales Manager, said, "The key feature of this product is the price. At £499, it effectively satisfies the market currently addressed by the PlayStation II but offers a lot more. Full standard PC compatibility offers the customer instant access to thousands of games that are available now and don't cost more than the console!"

Tiny's Takami is a bit higher spec and price. So Colin might say it doesn't satisfy the market currently addressed by the PlayStation II.

Takami all-in-one PC

It comes with a 800MHz Duron, 40Gb hard drive, and wireless keyboard which has a mouse built in. It is also in a nice silver hi-fi style case. It's £999 without a TV, £1499 with a 15in LCD screen, and £6,999 for the NEC 42in gas plasma TV and DTS home theatre sound system. Tiny said it sold two of the top end systems off its stand on the Ideal Home preview day.

There's probably a market for both these machines - just not a mass one. But with the PC market destined to fall this year these retailer/assemblers have got to do something. ®
