Future Power preps less iMac-like ePower

Dark grey case and pastel shades will differentiate the two machines, says company

Future Power, developer of the iMac-alike ePower PC and target of legal action from Apple, is already working on a successor product that looks less like the iMac than the current ePower. ePowerLast week, Apple won an injunction against Future Power from shipping the ePower in the US until the Mac maker's claims that the machine infringes its iMac copyrights come to court.

iMacA Future Power spokesman told The Register at Comdex that the company's mistake had been to use a similar blue colour on its machine to the iMac's blueberry hue. However, he denied that the ePower was fundamentally the same as the iMac. "It's got a different processor and a floppy drive, for a start," he said. As for the two computers' more visual similarities: "There's only so many ways you can design an all-in-one." The second-generation ePower sports a much squarer shell in a platinum grey casing (a tad similar to Apple's new iMac DV Special Edition, we thought, but it was difficult to be sure from the photo of the prototype) with a pastel-coloured oval on each side. The slightly narrower rear of the machine is supported on two cones, each matching the colour of the ovals. The new ePower will come in blue, red, green and orange. The spokesman said the machine should ship sometime around March 2000. ®
