The site is built using a custom content management system which is written in Perl (http://www.perl.com/) and filters its input through HTML Tidy (http://tidy.sourceforge.net). The pages are generated using the GNOME libxslt library (http://xmlsoft.org/XSLT/).

The webservers are running Apache (http://httpd.apache.org/), with MySQL (http://www.mysql.com/) for the back-end database and the search engine. Our web applications (search (http://search.theregister.co.uk/), reader comments (http://comments.theregister.co.uk/), Reg Whitepapers (http://whitepapers.theregister.co.uk/), Reg Events (http://events.theregister.co.uk/), etc) are all built on mod_perl (http://perl.apache.org/). All the software runs on Debian GNU/Linux (http://www.debian.org/), chosen for its stability, reliability, flexibility, and especially for its superlative support of remote package management and upgrades.

The scripts, HTML, and CSS were created and edited using a combination of Vim (http://www.vim.org), GNU Emacs (http://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/), and Mozilla Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/)’s EditCSS (http://editcss.mozdev.org/) extension. Simon Myers, Aaron Crane, Geoff Richards, and Hannah Dee at GBdirect (http://www.gbdirect.co.uk) did the typing (and thinking).
